All mentions (or all occurrences) of the diagnosis regardless of the order on the medical record were used to identify the discharges for influenza in Table 1-Table 4 (ICD-9-CM code 487), all-listed diagnoses were used to identify the discharges for influenza and pneumonia-related inpatient hospital stays and emergency room visits in Table 5 and Table 6 (ICD-9-CM codes 480-487). The discharge record may include more than one diagnosis specific to influenza (i.e., 487.0 - influenza both with pneumonia and 487.8 - influenza with other manifestations). Therefore, the sum of occurrences of all-listed diagnoses in Table 1 (the column sum in this table) is greater than the total number of influenza-related discharges.
