Brownfields/Land Reuse Program
Brownfields are real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by real or perceived contamination. Land redevelopment, cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties, protects the environment and takes development pressures off greenspaces and working lands.
Public Health agencies have a role in brownfield and land redevelopment sites because the sites may contain real or perceived physical or chemical hazards. In addition, sites may be accessed by trespassers and/or recreationalists, potentially resulting in exposure to physical or chemical hazards.
The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) received funding from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) to conduct activities at Brownfield sites to identify health concerns, mitigate exposure, and address community health concerns.
