Flu or Influenza
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness spread mostly through coughing and sneezing.  Influenza viruses are already circulating in Arizona this year; the most common is the H1N1 which first appeared in the spring.  Seasonal flu will most likely appear later in 2009.  The symptoms for both are similar and so is the treatment.  Sometimes, you need to see a doctor for the flu.

The best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccination.  The seasonal flu vaccine is available now at clinics and doctor’s offices around the state. The H1N1 vaccine will not be available until mid to late October.  When the new vaccine first arrives, it will be given first to those most likely to have complications.  (See Special Groups)
